Unlocking Lough Neagh’s treasures
By Connla Young
A new project has been launched to discover the hidden heritage around Lough Neagh’s shoreline.
Over the next 12 months archaeologist Moira O’Rourke will carry out a survey of the ancient lough’s shoreline in the hope of uncovering hidden treasures.
The project has several aims including digitally recording all the main archaeological monuments, sites and artefacts along the shores of Lough Neagh. It also hopes to identify new finds through the surveying of four main areas around Lough Neagh including the shore around Toomebridge and the mouth of the Moyola River.
Those behind the project also hope to engage with the local people and communities around the lough to get them directly involved in both recording and surveying its rich heritage.
It is anticipated that a larger heritage programme will be developed once the archive is complete.
Some local landowners have already contacted Moira regarding the uncovering of Neolithic and Mesolithic artefacts on the shores of Traad Point, near Ballyronan.
Moira intends to meet local history and community groups over the next couple of months in a bid to broaden the scope of the project.
Jim Canning, Chairman of Lough Neagh Partnership said: “This is a great opportunity to create a Lough Neagh archive which will be used as a basis for developing cultural and heritage tourism on Lough Neagh.”
