Elvis coming to Glenullin
GLENULLIN is all set to be shook up when one of the world’s leading Elvis tribute artistes heads up a spectacular fundraising charity event later this month.
Jim ‘The King’ Brown will be joined onstage at Glenullin GAA Community Centre by Ireland’s favourite famous housewife May McFettridge for the Cancer Lifeline fundraiser on Saturday, February 20.
The duo will be joined by well known BBC sports personality Mark Sidebottom, who will act as Master of Ceremonies throughout the evening.
The event has been organised to raise much needed funds for the Belfast based charity which provides a lifeline to hundreds of cancer sufferers and their families.
Cancer Lifeline was set up ten years ago by a small group of women who were all affected by cancer.
Unfortunately, they did not all survive but the management committee are still comprised of women who are at different stages of their cancer journey.
The charity’s work includes cancer prevention, health promotion, protection of health and well being as well as improving diagnosis, treatment management and care provision for all coping with cancer.
The charity has also given advice to other self help groups on setting up similar provision for people affected by cancer throughout the North.
Colm McNicholl, a native of Glenullin, who now lives in Belfast, helped set up a small fundraising committee three years ago which he christened ‘Friends of Cancer Lifeline’.
“We held a charity night in Glenullin in October 2008 and the people of the Glen and surrounding areas were so generous that it encouraged our members to put more energy into more fundraising events,” said Colm.
“We have had a very successful 2009 but the ever increasing need continues to be great.”
Leading act Jim ‘The King’ Brown says he is delighted to be back in Glenullin supporting the charity.
“As a patron I am aware of the great work that is carried out by Cancer Lifeline, reaching out to those affected by a cancer diagnosis,” said Jim.
May McFettridge quipped: “I was at an open air concert with Colm 22 years ago and I was so good I have been asked back so quickly again!
“But seriously though I am very pleased to lend my support to Cancer Lifeline who do so much great work in the community.”
Pledging his support, Mark Sidebottom added: “I was at the event 22 years ago that May refers to and I look back at that time with very fond memories.
“I am honoured to be asked to be MC for the evening and to lend my support to this worthy event.
“Glenullin has a wonderful sporting tradition and still has many sporting stars playing for the Derry team.”
