Major makeover for Magherafelt
THE face of Magherafelt could be set foTHE face of Magherafelt could be set for a major makeover after plans to revamp the south Derry town were revealed.
Social development minister Margaret Ritchie was in the town last week to give the green light for the Town Centre Masterplan.
Magherafelt council officials, councillors and local business people have come together to help give the market town the much needed boost.
It is understood the revamp blueprint includes plans to make the Diamond area of the town a pedestrian zone.
Magherafelt councillor Jim Campbell welcomed the development.
He said: “I think it is a good initiative and it is a sign of the good working relationship now established between local business men, councillors and council officers. Hopefully it will lead to even stronger relationships in the future.”
Social Development minister Maragaret Ritchie has given the master plan her approval.
She said: “: “I was very impressed by the case made to me for the preparation of Town Centre Masterplans when I met with the Town Centre Forums for Magherafelt and Cookstown last week. Taking into account the comments and suggestions made during those meetings, I have decided to proceed immediately with the appointment of consultants.”
