Funding boost for Derry groups

March 8th, 2010

Two County Derry community groups have been awarded funding from BBC Children in Need to help make a positive difference to lives of children and young people in the area.
Roe Valley Residents Association were rewarded £52,321 while Feeny Community Association picked up a grant for £28,200.
The allocation of these grants was announced at a special event held in The Playhouse in Derry last week to celebrate this and other wide ranging projects supported by the charity.
Each project that received a grant from BBC Children in Need works with children and young people who may be affected by abuse, homelessness, neglect, poverty, or those who have disabilities, psychological disorders or those who have serious illness.
Roe Valley Residents Association is regarded as the nucleus of the Limavady community running a variety of courses and events in their Community House.
The Association creates an environment where residents feel a sense of belonging giving them the opportunity to take part in various activities related to their needs.
Feeny Community Association was set up several years ago to centralise and co-ordinate the existing range of community activities within the area and to facilitate the development of others.
The group runs focused youth recreational and educational activities and helps promote volunteering to encourage the more disadvantaged groups to become active and have a positive influence in the development of their community.
Paddy Sloan, National Head of BBC Children in Need, Northern Ireland said the grants made it possible to improve young lives.
“It is the incredible generosity, imagination and commitment of supporters throughout Northern Ireland that makes it possible to change lots of young lives and it’s great to be able to celebrate with another 33 projects added to our total of almost 200 groups working with children and young people across Northern Ireland,” he said.
