One of County Derry’s largest credit unions has joined forces with a local advice service to provide help with financial matters and benefit uptake.
The unique link up between Moyola and Toome Credit Union and Magherafelt District Advice Service will provide a free and confidential service aimed at easing financial problems.
In addition to offering guidance about benefit entitlements, the service will also provide discrete advice on how to manage money and debt issues.
The advice service will hold a clinic at Moyola and Toome Credit Union’s Newbridge offices on the last Friday of every month and is open to everyone in the community.
Chairman of Toome and Moyola Credit Union, Cathal Boyd, highlighted his organisation’s role in helping communities currently facing hardship.
He said: “As we all hear in the news and read in the papers the economic climate has worsened considerably and within our own local community many of our members are experiencing job losses and indeed further financial hardship looks increasingly likely in the months ahead.
“This has affected member’s ability to save and also curtailed their borrowing capacity. We must remember that Credit Unions were established in times of adversity and hardship and now in times of crippling personal debt we are needed more than ever.”
Aidan Gribbin from Magherafelt District Advice Service urged people to avail of the service.
He said: “The Mid Ulster Area, has suffered much economic gloom as a result of the downturn and many families have been adversely affected by the recession.
“I would urge all people and families to avail of this advice service if they are struggling to get by or pay their debt. Our service aims to help people budget and maximise their income as well as corresponding with creditors. Our service is free and confidential.”
Magherafelt and District Advice Service will hold a clinic at the offices of Moyola and Toome Credit Union, 35 Blackpark Road, Toomebridge, on Friday, March 26, between 2pm and 4.30pm.
