New exhibition on local townlands
Posted online: Aug 2nd, 2010
Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 4, a new exhibition entitled ‘Stories of Our Townlands’ will open at Green Lane Museum at the Roe Valley Country Park.
The exhibition will be launched publicly at 7.30pm and it will then be open daily from 1.00pm to 4.45pm until Monday, 30 August.
Developed by Gelvin Area Community Association with the Causeway Museum Service, the exhibition provides an insight into rural life and traditions in the Gelvin area.
Surrounded by the agricultural machinery and tools on display in the museum, the photographs tell us about the people that used these tools and will be of interest to anyone exploring the heritage of the local area.
With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Gelvin Area Community Association have embarked on a local history project aiming to record the life and working patterns of the Gelvin area over the past 150 years. A team of volunteers have been working together researching the history of their townlands, exploring traditional agricultural practices, mapping dwelling houses and recording stories of the families that lived and farmed there.
This exhibition is the first of a varied and interesting programme of activities and events during the Gelvin Townlands Project. “This project is a wonderful example of what a local community can do to record and share their unique cultural heritage,” said Gemma Reid, Causeway Museum Service Community Outreach Officer.
“Credit must go to the team of volunteers who have collected this material over quite a short period of time. Green Lane Museum is delighted to be able to host this exhibition, and we hope it will help the group attract more stories and photographs from the local community to add to their archive.”
