Big hearted truckers did their bit for charity this week when they presented a special cancer unit with over £13,000.
The cash was raised for the Palliative Care Centre at Antrim Area Hospital by the Mid Ulster Truckers during a weekend fundraising drive in May.
A cheque for £1,000 was also given to the Maghera based Riding for the Disabled.
Over 129 trucks took part in a massive convoy across south Derry and hundreds more attended a fun weekend at Mid Ulster Auctions.
An annual event, the truck run and fun weekend is organised each year by the Mid Ulster Truckers who were recently registered as a charity.
Event organiser, Brigid Donnelly, says attention has already turned to next year’s event.
She said: “We would like to thank everybody who took part in this year’s event and all those who helped to make it happen. We would especially like to thank the drivers who helped with the lorries. Maureen Hutchinson from the Palliative Care Centre came down to see us recently and told us that the first patients will be in beds by next May and it will be the only palliative care centre in the world fully paid for before the patients enter it. That’s something we are very pleased to have contributed to. We would also like to thank our sponsors PMG Contracts, Outdoor Services and Mid Ulster Auctions.
“We are already thinking of ways to make next year’s event bigger and better. The Mid Ulster Truckers have recently been registered as a charity and anybody who wants to join us is more than welcome.”
